Criminologists of South Asian Origin
At this link is a google form to assess whether there is sufficient interest in creating a group of South Asian Criminologists that can meet regularly at conferences (mainly American Society of Criminology & Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, although others can be added to the list).
It is primarily intended to be a group of academics (and academically-oriented practitioners such as police, lawyers, policymakers, social workers, etc) of South Asian origin who are interested in engaging in dialog about criminology and criminal justice-related topics. We are collecting your contact information and other details to see how many of us are out there and the level of interest in creating such a group for meeting at conferences and collaborating on projects.

Prison and Jail Reform during the Global Pandemic—Short-term Solution or Long-term change?
During the current Global Covid-19 crisis, prisons and jails in each global region have been found to be hot spots for the outbreak of the corona virus, and several countries have reported high rates of infection, serious illness and death for both prisoners and corrections staff. Judges, legislative policy makers and corrections administrators in each global region have been faced with a Sisyphean task: protect the public from “dangerous” inmates, while protecting inmates and staff (and the public) from Covid-19. At the core of the debate on how to respond to the pandemic is the definition of what exactly constitutes a danger to society.
To manage this crisis, many countries are utilizing both front-end and back-end alternatives to incarceration in prisons and jails to move individuals from institutions to the community, resulting in reductions in the global prison and jail population. While advocates for sentencing reform argue that such reductions are long overdue, others worry about the potential harm to the public if these reforms last more than a few months.
In this special issue, we will examine the impact of the pandemic on both prison and jail downsizing and the expansion of community-based sentencing and early release mechanisms. Papers documenting the institutional and community correction system’s response to the pandemic– within and/or across global regions– are now being solicited. We hope to include articles highlighting the strategies being employed in countries representing each global region; we are also interested in assessing both the short and the long-term impact of these changes. If you are interested in contributing to the special issue, please contact James Byrne, Editor-in-Chief, Victims & Offenders: An International Journal of Evidence-based Research, Policy, and Practice https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/uvao20/current, at profbyrne7@gmail.com . Manuscripts for the special issue will need to be completed by August 1, 2020 to be included.
